Local MP Bill Wiggin has welcomed the conversion of Ashperton Primary School to Academy status.

Under plans first revealed by the Conservative party in 2009, state primary schools demonstrating excellence in performance and leadership are to be given academy freedoms over their curriculum, budget, staff and school hours. As a result, Ashperton will now be accountable to parents for overall standards in addition to being free from Local Authority control.

Bill commented, ‘Ashperton is an outstanding school with dedicated staff and a great ethos. I am delighted that the achievements of both staff and pupils have been recognised in this way.

This really is the Big Society in action – responsibility, respect and long term solutions. There is nothing more important than giving children the best start in life and it will be a pleasure to watch this new Academy thrive in the months and years to come.’
