Bill Wiggin MP has voiced his concerns over recent news that two planned pilot badger culls, designed to reduce bovine TB, will now be postponed until summer 2013.
‘This is a sad result for farmers and healthy badgers, as TB will continue to spread unchecked.
Today the Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has agreed to meet with me and discuss the situation, including better compensation for those with affected livestock.
Not only is this disease profoundly traumatic for farmers and their families but it is also extremely important that the sums paid out for each category of animal are right.
Currently the compensation levels do not reflect the cost of replacing some infected animals.”
A few hours previously the NFU had informed DEFRA that it could not be confident of removing the required minimum 70 per cent of badgers in West Somerset and West Gloucestershire over autumn.
