Last week Sir Bill Wiggin MP, Member of Parliament for North Herefordshire, met with Anthea McIntyre to discuss the recent Government Action Plan for the River Wye.
The Government appointed Anthea McIntyre, our former MEP, as the River Champion, whose role is to head the taskforce and oversee the management of the river.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Sir Bill to discuss Anthea’s objectives and ideas to implement the Government’s action plan to ensure the best results for the River Wye and local communities.
The Government’s Action Plan demonstrates our commitment to fix the issue of phosphates in the river.
It includes an allocation of £35 million to assist with cleaning the river through the use of new anaerobic digestors, muck burning incinerators, woodland buffer strips, and various grants that will help farmers to deal with livestock waste.
Sir Bill commented:
“It was a pleasure to meet Anthea, our new River Champion, last week and I was delighted to hear about the plans she will take forward.
“I look forward to working closely with her as we progress on this together.
“I hope that Anthea will quickly deliver on the Government’s action plan, and I am excited to see the much-needed improvements to the condition of the River Wye.”
